Traditional albums are huge, beautiful and built to last. I use Jorgensen albums because they are one of the best wedding album makers in the world and they specialise in traditional albums. Each album is hand made and excellently finished.
As can be seen in the second image to the right, the traditional album is around 2-3 times the thickness of the contemporary album which is itself already considerably thicker than the coffee-table album. This is due to the traditional album having a very large, thick, padded cover (in this case leather) and because it's pages are very thick.
The pages of traditional albums consist of very thick card with metal corners to help preserve the shape of the page and reduce wear and tear. The pages are 'matted', this has always been the traditional way to make albums and consists of cut-out windows under which the photos sit. This means the images, even when facing each other, don't touch, so the chemicals in the paper do not damage each other, this helps preserve the look of the book.
